Road funding continues to be a real issue at all levels of government. Improvements must be made, but all options must be looked at, understood, and shared with the residents prior to any decision on funding is made. Mileage and bonding may be ways to relieve local budgets for future road improvement.
I have difficulty understanding why county and township officials run under a political party. At this level, the government is about the community and safety, not state policy.

Elected as a Victor Township Trustee, 2012-16. Appointed Victor Township Clerk in 2011.
My extensive professional experience in managing staff and budgets in a highly complex environment allows me to analyze problems and propose common sense solutions. As a former clerk and for the past four years as a Township Trustee, I have worked to improve the roads in Victor Township and helped lead the effort to review our fire and rescue services and negotiate a contract with Laingsburg Sciota Woodull Fire Authority (LSW). Those are important issues with the residents of Victor Township.
The voters of Victor Township have voted for a 1.5 mill assessment and renewed that millage. As a Victor Township Trustee, I support renewing that millage as the only way currently to improve our local roads. The taxpayers of Victor Township, and I think the State of Michigan, would support raising taxes to improve our roads and infrastructure if they believe those taxes will be used for the purpose as intended.
No. I am not comfortable with either the structure or scope of local government. Townships were created when Michigan became a state. The size was determined by how far someone could ride a horse in one day. As former Township Clerk and now as a Trustee, I see too much duplication between the roles of township officials and those of the county. By consolidating those entities, we could reduce the cost of government and use those savings on roads and services. I do not think that local input by our citizens would be lost in this consolidation. Less government and fewer politicians would mean more money for roads and services. We might even save a few tax dollars!
Instead of Townships I would propose changing the structure of the county commission so that each township would have two seats on the county commission. Township halls would remain to help serve local needs, such as meeting places and voting precincts. The Township jobs of supervisor, clerk and treasurer are all duplicated at the county level.
Fire and Rescue Services: under our previous provider we were paying too much for the services we were receiving. Poor decisions by previous fire chiefs and its board led to increased costs and services. I'll continue to work with LSW as our new fire and rescue service provider to keep costs down and provide prompt response times. Roads: from 1992 -2007, the Victor Township budget for roads was $4.5 Million. The area surrounding Lake Victoria which comprises almost a third of the population, received only $100,000 in designated funding. All areas of the township should be served by the township budget. Victor Township has some valuable assets. They need to be professionally managed.

Fire and Rescue services are the most vital. Minutes can decide life and death. There is a nationwide shortage of volunteer fire fighters and emergency medical personnel. Small units, such as individual townships, do not have the resources to provide cost effective and competent service. We need to consolidate units in order to provide better services across the county.
Victor Township provides excellent services at reasonable costs. By going with our new fire and rescue service (LSW) provider we are reducing costs both short term and long term while providing better services.
