Home address Charlotte, Michigan
Hometown Grand Rapids, Michigan
Family My wife, Joanne, and I have raised five children in Charlotte. Two of them now work in education.
I am running for Charlotte school board because I see opportunities for improvement in our district. I have a broad base of involvement our schools and community that gives me the unique perspective I can use to address the many issues facing our district. I have been a school board member in the past and have recently returned to the board. I have also been involved in Athletic Boosters and CJO, Lions, Optimist, and Kiwanis clubs. My wife and I have 5 children who are Charlotte graduates and have seen firsthand how their CPS experience has served them in their adult lives.
The number one issue facing our district is financial stability. Our district has had a strong history of using our resource well and being financial stable, but with the current issues of state funding and rapidly increasing retirement costs every district is in jeopardy. We need to work with our state legislators to address this. Declining enrollment is another issue that needs to be addressed. This is a total community issue and I believe we need to work as a community to grow. Accountability at all levels in our district is critical to better serve our community. Communication from top to bottom and accessibility need to be improved. We need better transparency.
We have cut to the bone in many areas including para professionals, maintenance, and custodial. We may need to look at reconfiguration of our administration. Any cuts considered must avoid impacting kids in the classroom.
I would consider closing or repurposing a building as we have successfully done in the past.
We can never be satisfied, there is always room for improvement.
Yes. I think we have successfully worked here to build and repurpose our facilities to keep pace with the current needs of our students and community.
On the whole I am satisfied with the performance of our superintendent. I see room for improvement in communications, transparency, and staff relations.
Yes
