As someone who grew up in the Lansing area, I’ve seen the changes our region as gone through over the past 30 years. As someone who is getting married this fall and starting a family, I have a vested interest in the future of our county. I bring a decade of public service and experience working on policy issues with various levels of government.
I believe in preserving green spaces and making sure parkland is readily available to residents. These areas are an asset to the community and help improve the quality of life for everyone. I support an appropriate level of spending to maintain our parks for everyone’s enjoyment.
It is no secret that the condition of state, county and local roads is terrible. Unfortunately, the state legislature failed to live up to its responsibility to appropriately fund road maintenance and repair. The county needs to make infrastructure funding a priority.
Yes, I support targeted tax increases to fund specific needs, such as road repair.
Ingham County should be a leader and play a larger role in working with local governments and with other counties in coordinating regional cooperation efforts.
I believe that cooperative efforts between the county and local governments should be explored. I do not necessarily see that as an expansion or shrinking of roles, but responsible governing to find efficiencies for citizens.
As a person seeking an elected office for the first time I look forward to learning more about the specific operations that are unique to Ingham County government. As I learn more, I will focus on the best way for the county to be responsive to citizens and advocate for adjustments accordingly.
Regional cooperation needs to be a priority for the county. This can be accomplished by continuing to build off of successful efforts such as the 9-1-1 call center and the Potter Park Zoo. The county also needs to address infrastructure funding. From trails to roads, funding needs to be prioritized to maintain and repair areas most in need. Long term debt and unfunded liabilities also need to be taken into consideration. By spending wisely and rebuilding its rainy day fund, the county can address these issues.
If the county has the ability to efficiently provide a service, and it makes financial sense to do, or if it makes sense to join a local government in providing that service, then the county should explore that option.
The county health department, sheriff road patrol, and infrastructure maintenance are all vital services.
I believe in being fiscally responsible. If there are redundancies that can be eliminated, or desired outcomes that are not being achieved, then I would be willing to cut or restructure those programs.
Yes.
I think that the passage of these special millages speaks to the value residents place in these services. Each millage supports a function that improves the quality of life our residents. I believe that the commissioners should be deliberative in their decisions to place millages before the voters and make sure that the service provides a real benefit and to carefully weigh needs, versus wants.
