Roads: Our roads are falling apart. With my support, the Commission has tripled the amount of funds available to assist local governments, bringing back hundreds of thousands in road repair dollars to my district. . Safe Communities: We can and should do more to prevent crime in our neighborhoods. I am leading an award winning bipartisan effort that is making a difference, distributing 10,000 free gun safety locks and raising awareness regarding steps to reduce the threat of gun violence. Job Growth: I am proud of my record of support for smart fiscal decisions and innovation. In an increasingly competitive world it is critical that we attract business investment and growth.
I have been a consistent and strong advocate for mass transit, including support for the SMART millage in the past. The Regional Transit Authority hasn’t adopted a final master plan and millage proposal at the time of this questionnaire. While I am generally in support of their goals, I want to be sure that Oakland County taxpayers receive maximum benefit and services for their millage dollars. I also want a clearer picture of how this millage will improve services for the people in Farmington, Farmington Hills and Southfield Township.
Fixing existing roads and bridges should be prioritized before building new roads. Steps should be taken to ensure our rapid growing senior and special needs populations have access to appropriate transportation options. We must work cooperatively as a region to meet our transportation challenges. This requires keeping an open dialogue with our neighbors and developing a cooperative strategy in how we spend the limited resources we have.
Body cameras can be a useful tool to ensure accountability, protecting both law enforcement officers and citizens. There are serious issues that must be settled regarding the public’s right to privacy and the safety of victims that need to be carefully considered. There are also costs that need to be considered, including the additional staffing needed to properly log and store data. As more law enforcement agencies begin to use body cameras, the answers to these questions and concerns will become apparent. I believe our Sheriff’s Department should take a cautious approach towards adopting widespread use of body cameras while these issues are settled.
I took an active role in fighting illegal drug trafficking during much of my 49 year career in law enforcement. Any reasonable person can see that our current strategy in the war on drugs isn’t working. Part of a better strategy is re-focusing our efforts on more serious and harmful drugs like heroin and cocaine. We must utilize our limited resources where they can make the most difference in saving lives and reducing violent crime. A better strategy to deal with less harmful drugs such as marijuana is through legalization in a regulated and controlled distribution system.
I am very proud of the steps the Oakland County Commission is taking on the issue of gun violence. As Chairman of the Public Services Committee, I oversaw a thorough investigation of this issue, enlisting the advice of experts in this area. As a result of this effort, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners were able to do something that has eluded many – we came together in a bipartisan way with solutions and a commitment to action on this issue. These actions include the annual distribution of thousands of free trigger locks, an ongoing public education campaign regarding safe firearms, mental health training for law enforcement and advocating for common sense state and federal measures
Oakland County does not have a direct role in administering our education system, but we can play a role in improving an environment to foster a better learning environment. For the past two years, the County Commission has partnered with Oakland Schools to provide first class training for teachers and school administrators to address the issue of bullying in our schools. We are working cooperatively through our health department with local schools to develop effective strategies on important issues such as prescription drug abuse and suicide prevention. The Commission has strongly advocated for more resources for schools to hire law enforcement liaison officers to keep students safe.
The County Commission is investing an unprecedented amount of funds to support local efforts to repair our badly deteriorated roadways. We have doubled our investment in the Tri-Party Road Improvement program which maximizes the county investment with a required 1/3 match from the Road Commission and the local government. We invested $1 million in replacement equipment for the Road Commission, freeing dollars to be spent on fixing the most pressing repair needs now. I played a central role in the development of a new program the County is undertaking to assist with the cost of road improvements on local city and village streets.
Oakland County has in the past and should continue to be a partner with local governments to improve the lives of our citizens. We are undertaking numerous efforts targeted to communities, such as Pontiac, that are experiencing unique challenges in many areas. These efforts include health education and personal nurse visits for new mothers, early intervention programs for at-risk youth, economic development and job creation programs, and assistance with aging infrastructure. Oakland County should continue to utilize our talent and resources to assist local communities in building a stronger future for all of our residents.
Crumbling and deteriorating infrastructure, especially roads, are harming our quality of life and economic growth. While additional resources will be coming in the future from the state, serious problems exist now that must be addressed. I have been a strong advocate for increased funding support for partnerships with the Road Commission and local governments to improve our roadways. I will continue to be a strong advocate for investing county funds in replacing and repairing existing road infrastructure.
Oakland County is widely recognized for our solid fiscal management and approach to balancing the budget. The Commission has worked closely with the County Executive in developing a rolling five year budget plan. We have consistently been ahead of the curve in addressing the costs that have crippled other government entities, such as long term employee pension liabilities. This has allowed us to maintain our excellent AAA bond rating, which saves taxpayers millions, and to weather financial downturns without raising taxes, laying-off employees or cutting back needed services. We must maintain and build on this strong record of fiscal responsibility.
I support accepting refugees in Michigan and Oakland County provided that reasonable assurances can be demonstrated that these individuals will not pose a threat to the security of Oakland County residents. I am concerned about the amount information that is available regarding individuals who are leaving countries where the stability of the government and local conditions make it impossible to gather needed facts regarding the background of the applicants.
There are many things the County is doing to assist low income residents already and we should be open to do more when effective proposals are put forward. There are a myriad of county programs to assist people in need, such as home improvement loans for individuals who would have difficulty obtaining financing, targeted programs to reach underserved individuals with health care needs, assistance for at-risk young people and put them on a better path, income based assistance with utility bills, amongst many more programs. We can improve on these programs by coordinating the many services and providing a simple, easy to use portal for people to learn what assistance is available.
Oakland County is fortunate to have a tremendous resource in the high skilled and well educated citizenry. I believe we must do what we can to retain and build on this talent pool. This requires maintaining an excellent quality of life that encourages people to live and raise their families in Oakland County. I support efforts to build vocational and skilled trade training. y. We also have a sizable and growing population of new Americans and immigrants. We must be a welcoming community that celebrates our cultural diversity and builds greater understanding of the economic benefits of attracting talent from around the world.
I love my community and country more than my party. After 49 years working in law enforcement, I am not intimidated by the pressure to follow the party line and I don't feel obligated to support everything my party does. At this point, I have concerns about all the candidates and I am going to reserve judgment to see how things progress.

Yes, there is currently a Gun Safety committee that has put together a program to giveaway gun locks and work to reduce gun violence in Oakland county.

We have great services. To try and make them better and reduce the cost to tax payers.
We are a strong AAA bond rated county. So the budgetary concerns are minimal. With our budget surplus we could look in to adding new low-income programs for our county.
With improvements to our processing/ screening system. We should help and welcome those in need.
Oakland county has done a good job with their low-income programs. So I would work to maintain the program's we have now and work to add new ones when possible.
